Healthy CHAT / Section One: Introduction
Section One
giving brief messages to promote healthy lifestyles
What is Healthy CHAT?
Healthy CHAT is a structured approach to giving simple health messages and offering guidance to assist with change. This is done by raising awareness of lifestyle risk factors and referring people for further support.
Healthy CHAT has four elements: Check, Hear, Advise and Talk.
This online learning module focuses on using Healthy CHAT with smoking, nutrition, alcohol and physical activity (SNAP).
The module aims to support healthcare workers to use Healthy CHAT with people who access their services.
In our communities, nurses and allied healthcare workers are able to support people who want to make healthy lifestyle changes. Every contact with a person who uses their service is an opportunity to raise awareness of health behaviours and offer advice on where to go for help.
Learning Objectives:
On completion of this learning module you will be able to:
- State the importance of healthy lifestyle choices.
- Describe the role of healthcare workers in supporting healthy lifestyle changes.
- List and describe the four elements of the Healthy CHAT approach.
- Provide examples of how you would use Healthy CHAT in your everyday practice.
In this module, the term ‘people’ refers to clients, patients, consumers, families and carers.
